Are you considering moving to the land of tulips and bicycles? Recent changes have been made to Dutch immigration policies and laws, and this information is crucial to know before your move—especially if you plan to make the Netherlands your forever home. The May 2024 coalition agreement primarily affects asylum seekers and labor migration.

Plan to Stay Forever?

Moving to a new country is exciting—it offers the chance to explore the Dutch culture, learn a new language, and adapt to a different lifestyle. If, at some point, you decide that the Netherlands is your forever home, it’s important to understand the new rules for permanent residency. The process of becoming a permanent Dutch resident prior to the May 2024 coalition agreement, becoming a permanent Dutch resident required five consecutive years of residency and passing the civic integration exam at an A2 language level. However, with the new agreement, there have been changes to these requirements. The waiting period for naturalization has been extended to 10 consecutive years, making it more of a marathon than a sprint. Additionally, the language level requirement has increased from A2 to B1, meaning a stronger grasp of the language is necessary.
Moving to the Netherlands opens new doors and brings exciting, joyful experiences, but it is vital to understand how changes in Dutch immigration law may affect you. If you choose to make the Netherlands your forever home, be aware that you are now required to renounce your original nationality or any additional nationalities.

30% Ruling Tax Change

If the 30% tax ruling in the Netherlands caught your attention as an international migrant, note that the 2025 Dutch Tax Plan will reduce this ruling from 30% to 27% by 2027. This is good news for international employees and their employers, as this tax advantage helps offset the costs of living, moving, and settling into a new country and market. Additionally, the Dutch government has implemented more selective and targeted labor migration policies, including strict measures to limit low-wage employment.
